Griffin beats Carrollton 56-35 for GA-AAAA title

ATLANTA (AP) - Jaquez Parks passed for four touchdowns and ran 73 yards for another score, amassing 554 total yards, to lead Griffin to a 56-35 victory over Carrollton for the Class AAAA state championship Saturday night at the Georgia Dome.

Trey Willis caught three touchdown passes and also had a 98-yard kickoff return for a score as Griffin (15-0) won its first title in 35 years in its first trip to the championship game since 1980. The Bears' 1978 title had been their lone title since 1942.

Carrollton (13-2) has seven state titles - the most recent in 1998. The Trojans lost to Sandy Creek in the 2010 championship game.

It was the highest scoring Georgia championship game ever; the 91 combined points besting the 90 scored in Brookwood's 50-38 victory over Colquitt County in 2010.

Parks completed 16 of 21 passes for 338 yards and carried 16 times for 216 yards. Willis caught seven passes for 167 yards.

Willis caught his third touchdown pass, from 11 yards out, to start the third quarter. Trey Chivers later delivered a 5-yard scoring run for Carrollton, but Willis returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards to give Griffin a 49-35 advantage.

Parks' long touchdown run was the only score of the fourth quarter.

Griffin trailed 14-0 early as Carrollton's Chivers scored on runs of 24 and 9 yards. Willis caught the first of his three touchdowns - a 30 yard strike - to cut the lead in half. Chivers then caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Wil Garrett to put Carrollton up 21-7. Willis gathered in a 53-yard haul from Parks to trim the lead to seven before the end of the frame. The teams combined for 357 yards and five touchdowns in the first quarter alone.

But Griffin rallied to lead 35-27 after a wild first half in which Parks accumulated 289 yards -- 228 yards passing with three touchdowns and 61 on the ground.

After Carrollton went up 24-14 early in the second quarter on a 34-yard field goal by Tyler Newsome, Parks hit Keyston Fuller for an 80-yard score, Telly Sloan scored from a yard out and Ryan Cochran ran 90 yards with a Carrollton fumble for a touchdown. Newsome got the Trojans back within eight points on a 23-yard field goal just before halftime.

Griffin defeated defending champion Sandy Creek 32-26 in the quarterfinals and then slipped by Wayne County 25-20 in the semifinals. Carrollton advanced to the title game with a 46-44 victory over Marist in four overtimes.
