5 easy steps to avoid gaining the Festive Five pounds

The holiday season is a tough time of the year for anyone trying to count calories. Temptation is everywhere, so how can we indulge without regretting it come January?

"What I tell most people is to try and kind of hedge your bets a little bit. If you absolutely love egg nog try to just have that be your splurge for the evening. Try not to go crazy with beverages, the desserts and the rich side dishes. Try to chose one area you will splurge on and then try to eat healthier the rest of the time," says Emily Schwartz, a registered dietician at Providence Park.

She says it's not healthy to say no to everything, you feel too deprived, but you need to make your calories count.

So instead of the Freshman Ten, we're trying to avoid the Festive Five.

+ Be picky and decide ahead of time what you'll indulge in
+ Weigh yourself every couple days
+ Increase the workouts
+ Don't go to a party hungry
+ Drink water in between those high calorie drinks

Remember even if you're just gaining a couple of pounds over the holidays statistics show most people do not lose that weight - so it does start to add up.
