On mall patrol with Paramus Police

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Paramus, N.J., is the No. 1 retail sales location in the country. It's a shoppers' dream come true. Police have stepped up patrols to make sure it doesn't turn into a shopper's nightmare. We rode along with the Paramus Police anti-crime unit for an exclusive look.

Cops have a lot of territory to cover in one of the largest concentrations of retail stores anywhere in the world. No one has been carjacked here in more than 10 years. But other crimes happen, Det. Sgt. Robert Von Schalscha said.

Riding through the parking lots with them, we saw what it looks like through this veteran's eyes.

The idea of this special team is to be ready for anything, yet still remain invisible, Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.

Most shoppers we talked with weren't aware someone is watching out for them.

While other shopping areas will be open around the clock in the days before Christmas, the earliest stores can open here is 7 a.m. And the latest they can close is 11 p.m.
