Chelsea art show features works with emojis

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Bamboo. Balloon. CD. Cigarette. Bomb. Revolver. Capsule. Hypodermic needle. Target. Beer. Cheers. Martini.

And if you're now mourning the last 200,000 years we humans spent creating and mastering language you should know Siri translating emoticons sounds about as cold and meaningless as one might guess.

At Eyebeam's Emoji Art and Design Show in Chelsea, we found that translation, along with an emoji typewriter, and 24 other pieces watched over by emoji-superfan Zoe Salditch.

"We asked artists to use emojis as part of their toolset," Salditch said.

But each of those emojis may combine to reveal something greater.

"I think this is the future, and it's evolving and you need to be open to changes in communication," one person said. Like converting the entirety of Moby Dick to emoji.

And what would ol' Herman have to say about the greatest work maybe in all of American fiction reduced to pixelated phone symbols? There is no folly of the beast of the earth which is not infinitely outdone by the madness of men. Actually he did say that, in this very book.

Whether this all makes us laugh, smile, or cry.

"Make me feel soft," said one man. "I'm a muscular man. I'm masculine so I don't use things like that."

Muscular masculine men or not, we sort of need to get used to it. Emojis seem destined to persist and evolve.

"I think smiley faces beget more smiley faces," one person said.

Making New York City more energy efficient

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?

If you thought camping meant leaving New York City, fuggedaboutit. Inwood Hill Park in Upper Manhattan and several other parks in the five boroughs are waiting for you and your family. New York City's family camping program, run by the Parks Department, is in full swing. No cars needed; your MetroCard will get you there.
