Ashanti: You Have To Have Your Hands In The Pie

Posted: Updated:

Ashanti is a busy woman. Not only does she have a new holiday album out now ("A Wonderful Christmas With Ashanti"), she also stars in the new holiday movie "Christmas in the City" on Lifetime. She talked about playing a character who's grumpy and does despicable things.

"It was kind of a challenge because that's not who I am as a person but I had a blast being Scrooge."

Maria also talked to Ashanti about how her involvement in the movie brought on her new Christmas CD.

"It was very organic, they obviously needed Christmas songs for the movie and instead of going to my old album we said hey, let's do some new ones."

Ashanti also talked about how some people describe her early career as an "instant success".

"That's what the misconception is. Like I had my first deal when I was 14. My first album and record didn't come out until 2002, I was 21. So there was a lot in the making that happened. When it happened, it was immediate...it was about six years before that we were trying for a long time."

Ashanti also has a new single out with Rick Ross called "I Got It". Her new album "BraveHeart" comes out next year. "Christmas in the City" runs throughout the month on Lifetime and her EP "A Wonderful Christmas With Ashanti" is out now.

Fun Facts About Ashanti: (Source: Wikipedia)

1) She is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actress. Ashanti is most famous for her eponymous debut album, which featured the hit song "Foolish", and sold over 503,000 copies in its first week of release throughout the U.S. in April 2002.

2) The album set a Soundscan record as the biggest opening week sales for a new female artist, outselling debuts by Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill. In the same week, she became the first female performer to simultaneously hold the top two places on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with "Foolish", and "What's Luv?" (with Fat Joe).

3) Ashanti broke records again by having three top ten songs, "Foolish," "What's Luv?" and "Always on Time", on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the same week, being the first woman to accomplish this feat and being second only to the Beatles.

4) In 2003, the self-titled debut album won Ashanti her first Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B album. As of 2008, Ashanti has sold over 15 million records worldwide. Ashanti ended the decade (2000–09) as the third top new R&B artist behind Alicia Keys and Beyoncé.

5) She also ended the decade at number 38 on the Top Artist of the Decade list. She is currently on the list of The Twenty Best Selling Music Singles Since 1990 for her single Foolish for selling 7.2 million copies to-date.
