Fast-Thinking NY Postman Saves Family

Posted: Updated:

A postal worker is crowned a hero after saving baby twin brothers from a burning building in New York City.

Jermaine Shirley was heading to work when he smelt smoke in his Bronx apartment building. He quickly alerted his neighbors and ran outside.

That's where he heard another neighbor, Everdean Codner, calling for help.

"When I got outside, I heard him in the back calling, asking for help, ‘somebody catch the baby,'" Shirley recalled.

Codner and his wife were stranded on their fire escape with their twin eleven month old boys, but they couldn't make it down with the babies.

"I couldn't even breath," Codner said.

Sensing the dire situation, Shirley hopped a fence, and caught both young boys, carrying them to safety.

"It wasn't a good area for me to catch him, so I said, ‘hold on while I run over there to the fence.' I climb up on the fence, catch the baby and then put one down while the nephew is coming down. I catch the second one, hand the baby to him, jump down, then the nephew threw the first one to me. I put him on the cart then I catch the next one and run out with the baby," Shirley described. "As soon as I see the baby closer, I grab the baby, but I go down with the baby, and hug him. I went down with the baby and catch him so I could hold him."

The twins were taken to a nearby hospital and are expected to be fine. People on the street are calling Jermaine a hero. Codner agrees.

"Definitely, because you don't have a second chance with my sons because it could have been worse," he said.
