Professor walks almost every block of NYC -- and writes about it

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

One step at a time, Bill Helmreich is a man who's seen it all. He has walked all five boroughs of New York City, nearly 125,000 blocks in all. It took him four years.

His feet have taken him to nearly every city street -- more than 6,000 miles -- dangerous or not. He said you cannot skip the tough, worst neighborhoods.

The CUNY sociology professor's journey is detailed in his book, "The New York Nobody Knows: Walking 6,000 Miles in the City." He writes about hidden gems like a waterfall on 180th Street in the Bronx. He writes about the city's hundreds of communities.

Talking to strangers gave him insight into strange discoveries, like an exorcism-performing church in the Bronx.
