MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

With the last game in the history books, the lights at the Metrodome have switched off for the last time as the wrecking ball nears -- but fans say the place that was often a punch line served as a great stage for sports.

The days of "the dome" are officially done, and for many who packed the last Vikings' game inside the stadium on Sunday, the best way to sum up the goodbye was: "Thanks for all the memories."

Even despite the frigid temperatures, a feeling of nostalgia drew fans back to the Hubert Humphrey Metrodome one last time.

In the stadium's 32-year-history, many memories were made for Vikings and Twins fans. Some of the memories were good, even great -- like the World Series.

At 90 years old, Leo Hiebeler is one of the original season ticket holders. He's had a seat since 1961, and he celebrated the Dome's final day with four generations of his family.

Many made the farewell a family affair, spending hundreds -- even thousands of dollars -- on single game tickets to see the closing celebrations. The Anderson family has sat side-by-side at the 50-yard line for decades, and they admitted tearing up at the opening anthem.

With the usual roaring crowd, the Vikings scored one final win under the old roof against the Detroit Lions. After topping the Motor City kitties, a few fan favorites -- including Adrian Peterson, former coach Bud Grant, and Matt Birk -- said gave a final promise: The Metrodome may soon be a piece of history, but it will never be forgotten.

The roof is set to be deflated on Jan. 18 as demolition begins to make way for the new stadium.
