Weinberg Talks Bridgegate

Posted: Updated:
Fort Lee, New Jersey (My9NJ) - The now infamous “bridgegate” involving the unannounced closures of the George Washington Bridge is a story that just won’t go away.

One woman who has been pushing hard for answers is Senator Loretta Weinberg. She has been leading the charge into the investigation and she says that now there are still so many more layers to this whole debacle.

“My colleague in the assembly John Wisniewski who was chairing the Assembly Transportation Committee has looked through two batches of documents that were subpoenaed and have been received. The first batch of documents shows very clearly that on Monday, the first day of this horrendous traffic jam, people were calling the Port Authority including all of the Fort Lee town officials and they were calling people high up who tried very hard not to respond,” Weinberg said.

The issue that is arising now is that the subpoena power ends January 14th. This means that the investigation stops on that date as well and that much of what we know can become irrelevant if the investigation is unable to move forward.

“Well we won’t have found out certain facts around this; however it would be difficult for me to believe that the assembly, both sides of the aisle, wouldn’t want to get to the bottom of this to make sure some kind of an environment hasn’t shown up at the Port Authority that needs a lot of taming. Also, Assemblyman Wisniewski and I are passing a joint resolution from the assembly and the senate urging congress to take a look at the law that created the Port Authority. They’ve already been criticized by the government accounting office for the lack of transparency and it would seem to me that this, the bill that created them, which I think is almost 100 years old and needs more looking into,” Weinberg said.

Weinberg expects to get this legislation passed by January 13th.
