Tyler Armstrong: 9-Year Old Reaching The Highest Peaks

Posted: Updated:

"They all think I'm crazy because what nine year old wants to do this."

When most kids were home with their families on Christmas Eve, nine year old Tyler Armstrong was doing something no other nine year old had ever done: becoming the youngest person in recorded history to reach the summit of Argentina's Aconcagua mountain. At 22,841 feet, it's the tallest peak in the Western and Southern hemispheres. He went with his dad and a Sherpa to raise awareness and money for a disease called Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Tyler told John and Lisa he learned about it when he saw kids at a barbecue in wheelchairs who couldn't play.

"I asked my dad how come they couldn't run around with me and my dad told me why and then I kinda got that connection, and now we're here."

The ascent took it's toll on both Tyler and his father Kevin... "It took 10 days to go up, 2 days to come down so in all it took us 12 days...our legs were really sore, we had blisters, so we were really hurting when we were coming down."

The fact that both father and son got to make such an incredible journey together and raise money for a worth cause isn't lost on Tyler. "It was truly amazing to see my dad and me both together at the summit."

Fun Facts About Tyler Armstrong: (Source: TopWithTyler.com)

1) Mount Kilimanjaro (19,341 feet) is the tallest mountain on the African continent. His ascent to the 19,341 ft. summit was to help raise funds and awareness for CureDuchenne.  The minimum age limit set by the Tanzania National Park Authorities for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is 10 years old. However, Tyler was able to obtained a special permit through the great help of Travel Dirty to climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

2) Tyler climbed the Lemosho Route. It took him 8 days of climbing round trip. He hiked approximately 48.5 miles with an elevation gain of 10,644 feet. The Kilimanjaro National Park shows that only 30% of hikers actually reach the summit. However, Tyler trained hard to be one of the 30% to successfully summit Mount Kilimanjaro.

3) Tyler became interested in helping boys who aren't able to take on the challenges of mountain climbing when he met a Duchenne boy close to his age who is wheelchair-bound. Tyler realized he could use his athletic abilities to help others. Tyler represented the over 300,000 boys worldwide when he faced this epic, eight-day challenge and adventure.
