Community EMS in Southfield taking extra steps to help the homeless in the cold

When it gets even colder Monday night and Tuesday Community EMS in Southfield will be on-call to provide extra help for the homeless.

A special 20 person medical "rehab unit" will hit the streets to provide medical care, blankets and coffee for people who have no place to go for shelter.

Community EMS is accepting donations at 25400 W. Eight Mile Rd. in Southfield.

They also are asking you to call them if you see a homeless person in distress. You can call at 1-800-343-4427.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Warning that's in effect until Wednesday morning for wind chill values that could drop as low as 40 below zero Monday night. Temperatures will stay bitterly cold Tuesday with a gusty wind creating dangerous wind chills. High of only 2. The bitter cold eases by weeks end. Temperatures look to get back above freezing by the weekend.

      48-year-old Keith Andersen retired in February from the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department. On June 21, he was involved in a roll over accident where he suffered a broken neck. As of now Keith has no movement in his the lower half of his body. The Fraternal Order of Police, Grosse Pointe Lodge 102 is holding a fundraiser for Keith on Aug 5th. Amy Lange will have a full report on Fox 2 News at 5:00 p.m.
