Father Re-Enrolls In College And Joins Youngest Son In Basketball

Posted: Updated:
BUFFALO, MN -

It's not uncommon for two basketball players to be siblings, but it is a little unusual for two players to be a father and son.

Emmaus College has taken two family members on this year's team, fifty-five-year-old Paul Ruter and his son, Celab.

Three decades ago, Paul Ruter enrolled at Emmaus Bible College and joined the basketball team, but he quit after one semester to take over the family farm.

"I loved farming. That's what I wanted to do," Ruter said.

He supported the family and ensured that all six of his children attended college.

"I always had it in the back of my mind to go back," Ruter admitted

When the youngest of his children emptied the nest and enrolled at Emmaus, Paul, 54, decided to go with him and finish his own education degree.

Being a farmer, Paul's body was still nimble, so he decided to continue playing basketball again. He was voted the MVP when he was a freshman 32 years ago.

"I was like, you know what, this could be a lot of fun," his son Caleb recalled.

"My son was on the team," Ruter laughed and said. "I thought, ‘that's not something that happens every day.'"

But very soon, they were practicing together and having lots of fun as teammates. Both players are standouts on the team. In fact, Caleb told KCRG that his father is a really good passer.

The father/son team-time has one more year to go, as Paul is a junior and Caleb is a sophomore.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
