Fulton grand jury recommends probe into jail

ATLANTA (AP) - A Fulton County grand jury has taken the unusual step of asking for a special grand jury investigation into the county jail.

The members of the grand jury that met in November and December decided that, in addition to their other duties, they wanted to look into the county's schools and jail.

Grand jury foreman Gillen Young told reporters Thursday they found no significant problems with the schools, but recommended an additional investigation into the jail.

Young said there was particular concern about inadequate staffing, which raises safety concerns for the jail staff and inmates.

A federal lawsuit was filed in 2004 detailing dirty, dangerous and crowded conditions at the jail. The county has struggled to meet the conditions set forth in a 2006 agreement to settle that suit.
