So long, handshakes, and hello to fist bumps?

The handshake is a sign of trust, respect, greeting and gratitude so why do some health experts want to see it get rid of it?

"If you really don't want to spread virus from person to person then you don't want to touch anybody at all," says Dr. Carl Lauter from Beaumont Hospital.

We know our hands pick up germs from all kinds of places, and that's why Lauter is requesting a change in the culture. He suggests an elbow bump instead of the fist bump.

But, turns out the fist bump has science on it's side. Bacterial cultures in the Journal of Hospital Infections show way more germs after 20 handshakes compared to 20 fist bumps.

Remember, viruses are spread when you touch your germy hand to your eyes, nose or mouth. That's why, the less contact, the better.

Until the elbow bump catches on, or if you feel social pressure to shake hands, just wash your hands or use hand sanitizer as soon as possible.
