Savannah building $3.9M police training center

Posted: Updated:

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Construction is underway in Savannah on a new $3.9 million building for training the coastal city's police officers.

The new training center will have 20,451 square feet of space for classrooms, exercise rooms, administrative offices, a computer lab and an auditorium. Construction is being paid for with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds.

Savannah-Chatham County police officials say officer training is currently split between several properties in the Savannah area, including space at a mall and land formerly used by the military. The new training center will consolidate everything under one roof.

The training center is being built next to the department's new administrative services building that opened last May on land formerly owned by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The training space should be finished by mid-November.
