Strip mall fire damages 4 businesses; investigation continues

Posted: Updated:

An early morning fire ripped through a valley strip mall in the area of 19th Avenue and Camelback.  Four suites were damaged, but all the businesses were closed as a result.

"These guys got the worst of it because this is where the main part of the fire was right here."

Romando Gonzales surveyed the damage to the strip mall where he operates his computer repair shop.  He got a call around 2 a.m. Monday that the smoke alarm was going off and rushed over.

"When I got here, I mean.. it was like six to eight fire trucks, a big one parked right here," he said.

Video of the scene taken by the Phoenix Fire Department shows firefighters using heavy equipment to get inside the building and prevent flames from spreading to the roof.

"The fire was traveling horizontally from the corner of the strip mall, going both directions to the small businesses," said PFD's Tony Mure.

Four businesses sustained water and smoke damage, including a nutrition club.

The strip mall was closed when the fire broke out, causing investigators to question the cause although there was no indication of anything suspicious.  Initially, however, business owners shared some theories with us.

"Lights had been out for a while and stuff seemed kind of odd.. I didn't pay attention to it.. it's odd, it started there where it shut off," said Gonzales.

As a result of the fire, power was turned off to all the businesses, so no one could work.  The owners are hopeful things will be back to normal soon.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.  No firefighters were hurt battling the blaze.
