Seniors upset with living conditions at Detroit apartment complex

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

Grace Powell was brought to tears while she described the conditions at the McGivney Bethune apartment complex. She says they've been dealing with the conditions for months and they've been ignored.

"It's not right to treat us seniors like this, and I don't care what no one says," says Powell.

The apartment building is fairly new, but she says repairs and renovations have been delayed, the building has a problem with roaches and rodents, trash is overflowing and the complex needs a security guard.

"They bring all kind of people in here after four o'clock. You see these guys coming in here, certain people, all over the building," she says.

"We can't have residents concerned about their safety, concerned about the sanitation in the building," says Rev. David Bullock from the civil rights group Change Agent Consortium. He is taking their concerns to company that runs the apartment.

A worker kept Fox 2 cameras from seeing what the building looks like currently.

More than 50 tenants signed a petition demanding their concerns be addressed. A spokesperson for the complex says the company is taking their concerns seriously and will look into them.

Change Agent Consortium plans on meeting with apartment management to address tenants concerns. The meeting should happen sometime this week.
