BERWYN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Two people suffered smoke inhalation and two firefighters were injured during a fire in a bicycle shop in west suburban Berwyn early Thursday.

The blaze at Art's Bicycle Shop in the 6200 block of West Cermak ignited a few minutes before 4 a.m. and police officers who were first on the scene saw smoke, Berwyn Fire Chief Denis O'Halloran said.

The roof of the structure collapsed and debris underneath was still burning as of 10:15 a.m., O'Halloran said. Crews expected to have the fire extinguished within an hour.

Police said Cermak Road was shut down between Ridgeland and 61st avenues. Eastbound lanes were expected to reopen shortly, O'Halloran said.

Two occupants of the second-floor apartment above the bicycle shop were evacuated by the Fire Department and taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation, O'Halloran said.

Two firefighters were also injured battling the blaze, O'Halloran said. One was treated and released from a hospital, and the other did not require hospitalization.

ComEd workers were called to the scene about 4:40 a.m. and shut off power to about 1,600 customers in the area as a safety precaution, ComEd spokeswoman Kim Johnson said.

O'Halloran said about 3,000 ComEd customers lost power as a result of the blaze. As of 10:15 a.m., power had been restored to most customers, though about five nearby businesses were still without power.

About nine other suburban fire department assisted, O'Halloran said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
