Scrap metal thieves steal from addiction clinic's storage facility

(WJBK) -

For years, Quality Behavior has helped those who struggle with addiction. But now the clinic is struggling after scrap metal thieves stole from their storage facility. Antonio Sims, the facilities manager for the clinic, says they had hoped to turn the facility on East Grand Boulevard into a community soup kitchen, but now everything is gone.

Going after every bit of copper available, the suspects destroyed the ceiling and busted through the bathroom wall. Other items stolen were washer and dryer units, steel doors and two large heating units.

"We had three rooftop heating and air conditioning units. There's one left, and that has been gutted," Sims says.

The damage was discovered on Wednesday and those at the clinic estimate it to be around $100,000.

"[This is] not going to run us away. We're going to stand up. We'll secure it, and we'll do the very best we can to make certain that we have someone here 24 hours a day seven days a week visible," Sims says.

Now, those at the clinic find themselves heeding the advice they often give their clients: "'Just for today' is the slogan, it's what we stand for. We have today; today's another day, brand, new day. We're going to forge forward and keep going," says Sims.

If you have any information about this crime contact the Detroit Police Department.
