Sen. Levin and Pulte share new project areas fighting blight in Brightmoor

(WJBK) -

Senator Carl Levin and Detroit Blight Authority Chairman Bill Pulte held a news conference Monday to follow a tour around the Detroit Blight Authority's demonstration zone in Brightmoor. During the conference, technology developed and utilized by the Detroit Blight Authority were showcased for the first time and details were released about two new project areas.

"It will encompass working within the 14-block perimeter that we have; that will be one project. We will knock down 67 homes within a three to four week period," says Pulte. He and his partners hope to have the buildings down by May 30. They will also start clearing another 21 blocks, for a total of 35 blocks, from Outer Drive to I-96.

"What we're really focused on critically is getting rid of the crime, getting rid of the prostitution, the drug activity," Pulte says.

With funding from the Skillman Foundation, DTE Foundation, Ajax Paving, Gov. Snyder, Dan Gilbert and Marjorie Fisher, Pulte says this will serve as a blight demonstration zone and proof that blight removal is now being done properly so that Detroit receives government funding to continue this mission.

"The federal government will receive this message if I have anything to do with it, so that it's not just that we give millions of dollars to remove abandoned houses but that it's done quickly and that it's done in a way which is effective," says Sen. Levin.

So far, they've employed 28 local workers and raised more than one million dollars. Expanding the blight removal by 21 more blocks will cost $700,000-$900,000.

"When we look at this project, I think it is one of the best examples of why we can be optimistic about Detroit's comeback," says Kirk Mayes of the Brightmoor Alliance.
