Super Bowl 48 contingency plan

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - If Super Bowl 48 at MetLife Stadium had been scheduled for Tuesday, January 21, 2014, there wouldn't have been a big game to talk about the next morning.

That's because a snow storm like the one that dumped 13 inches of snow in East Rutherford and about a foot of snow in New York City, also brought transportation to a crawl, created hazardous driving conditions, and resulted in resources diverted to combat the storm. All of this would have been  plenty of reason to reschedule the game.

"It depends on when the snow falls and what kind of snow it is. Five inches of light fluffy snow is a lot different than five inches of heavy snow with an ice storm before that," said Eric Grubman, Exec. VP, NFL.

Super Bowl 48 will be the first time the game is played outdoors in a cold weather city.

As a result, the National Football League has taken unprecedented measures to prepare for all weather scenarios.

In the event the Super Bowl cannot be played at the time scheduled, the NFL is considering playing earlier in the day, or the day before or a day after.

“There are two levels of contingency planning. First is for playing the game in a tough weather situation. That one boils down to being ready... And most importantly that people think about in advance how to dress for the game," said Grubman.

The NFL will be distributing 'warm welcome' kits to fans at the big game on February 2 or whenever Super Bowl 48 is played. The bags will include a hand muffler, lip balm, a thick knit hat, ear muffs and texting gloves.

"You've got to wear the right stuff," said Grubman.
