Oaksterdam University Teaches Marijuana 101

Posted: Updated:

It looks like a normal class setting. The chairs are lined up, pens in hand, and the textbooks ready.  But this is not your typical university class.

"The class is itself; it's a lot of information," says Avery.

This is the advanced study of marijuana cultivation.

"A lot of people think ah, you're coming here learning how to grow a plant. There's a whole science behind it," she explains.

Avery is part of an enrollment shift at Oaksterdam University. Students flocking to this school from everywhere like Washington State, Colorado, even overseas.

"A lot of these states that are passing laws, we're getting a huge influx from there," said Sappal.

20 states plus Washington DC passed medical marijuana laws. Washington state and Colorado now allow recreational use. And there are other states on the cusp. There are other states on the cusp.

That's filling seats in the Oaksterdam lecture hall with students you don't see at a typical university.

"Well at 56 years old it's a little bit hard going back again," says Cutshall.

"I've had students from Chicago before they actually passed the law so the moment the laws passed. Boom! They already knew what to do," Sappal explains.

Avery is hoping his unconventional university choice will prepare him if and when the empire state goes green.

"Just like any other school you go to, you have homework, you have final exams, you have readings, everything. It's a lot of work" declares Avery.

But the high they hope to get out of this class is measured in grades.
