Escalators still out at Staten Island Ferry's Manhattan terminal

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

452 days after Hurricane Sandy waters smashed into the Whitehall Terminal at the southern tip of Manhattan, Staten Island Ferry commuters do not have working escalators. The terminal had five working escalators when it was rebuilt in 2005 until Sandy struck in 2012. Now 100,000 commuters a day must climb.

Walking up and down steps is not that hard for the healthy and unencumbered. For Gianna Young though, with her three small children and a stroller, it is not easy, especially when the elevator is out.

Repairmen say they arrived at the Whitehall Terminal only three months ago. They have been building the escalators from scratch -- motors, steps, handrails. The center two escalators were working Friday. Workers say the escalators will be ready for the public by the end of January.

A spokesperson said the Department of Buildings inspectors will check the escalators for safety on Tuesday. If they, pass they could then be used by the public.

The three other escalators, all on the sides of terminal, may take one to two more months to rebuild, the workers say.

Why did it take the city's Department of Transportation so long to repair the escalators? A spokesman said the city had to get the money first and then the parts had to be manufactured.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
