The Vince Lombardi Trophy is crafted by Tiffany and Co. and is one of the most iconic in professional sports. The minute that trophy hits the field, you know another Super Bowl has just been won.
The trophy was created in 1967 for the first Super Bowl. It was designed by Tiffany and Co. Vice President Oscar Reidner and former NFL Commissioner Pete Roselle.
Every year, the trophy is given to the owner of the winning team.
Here are a few stats: it stands 22 inches high, weighs 7 pounds and is crafted entirely by hand out of sterling silver.
Mark Taub, owner of Crown Trophy in Manhattan, says it is the most knocked-off design. It seems everyone wants a replica of the Vince Lombardi.
At the NFL headquarters on Park Avenue, even the design of the reception desk mimics the trophy. This year the one awarded for Super Bowl 48 will be the last crafted at a silver smith in Parsippany, N.J., before the work is shifted to a facility in Rhode Island.
The archival copy is kept at the flagship store on 5th Avenue. When it does come out of the vault, it is only handled with white gloves.
For 48 years the Vince Lombardi Trophy has signified excellence in professional football. Even people who don't know a ton about the sport know what it is.
Tiffany and Co. executives say the trophy was designed to be hugged and adored. It signifies the culmination of a season and the confirmation of a job well done.
