How to get the most out of your fireplace this winter

Posted: Updated:

How do you escape the cold? Go where the heat is! Perhaps that's at American Fireplace and Barbecue, where 81 gas fireplaces are on live display. Owner Steve Brown tells FOX 2's Jason Carr the persistent cold temperatures have impacted his business.

"Without a doubt. This time of year it's always generally busier. But this is to a new level. ... People are using their fireplaces more than ever before," Brown says.

Natural gas fireplaces remain king, and now so called blue flame ventless gas heaters are also in demand. Yet Brown says not so many people are converting back to wood. Rather, they're trying to make their existing gas fireplaces more efficient and effective.

How do you do that?

Brown explains, "You can buy blower grates, you can do things that do make your fireplace more efficient. There's fireplace inserts. There's vent-free gas logs. There's blower grates, or fire exchange grates, that will pump heat into the room more than just a standard gas fireplace taking heat out of the house."
