Man dies after being pepper sprayed, restrained by security guards at Northland mall

Posted: Updated:

A family is asking how their loved one ended up dead at Northland Mall after his last moments of life were caught on cell phone video, which shows him being pepper sprayed and restrained by three mall security officers.

Southfield police have identified the victim as 24-year-old Mackenzie Cochran.

Authorities say Cochran was standing suspiciously outside a Northland jewelry store on Monday when mall security asked him to leave. Cochran returned to the mall the following day and threatened to kill someone. Security was called a second time, but police say Cochran appeared ready to assault someone and was breathing heavy with his fists clenched.

Fearing for their safety, security officers pepper sprayed and restrained Cochran. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"He's telling them, 'Let me up, let me up, I can't breathe.' They were spraying him and telling him to quit resisting arrest," says Akil Copeland who witnessed the incident.

"I wanted to give the man CPR because he looked unresponsive. He was slunched over on the floor," says Copeland.

The victim's sister believes Cochran was beaten to death, and the family has hired a lawyer.

Southfield police are investigating Cochran's death.

Northland's general manager is expressing sympathy to the victim's family, and vows to find out what really happened.
