Gilbert, Chandler are considering jail partnership

Posted: Updated:

GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) - In an attempt to reduce cost and travel time shuttling prisoners to a Phoenix facility, Gilbert police are considering partnering with Chandler to build and operate a jail in Gilbert.

Gilbert Police Cmdr. Pete Smith says the move could save the town up to $70,000 a year.

If the partnership moves forward, Gilbert and Chandler would split an estimated $300,000 construction cost.

The first-year cost to Gilbert would be about $340,000 for construction, personnel and operations.

It would likely take two to three years to recoup the construction cost with money saved while no longer paying booking fees to Maricopa County.

Chandler police submitted the jail project as part of its budget requests for fiscal 2014-15.

It will be voted on as part of the budget approval process in May.
