Detroit News reporter reflects on city's high infant mortality, child deaths

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT -- A newspaper's investigation into the deaths of Detroit children in recent years has found that infant mortality and violence are the primary causes.

The Detroit News this week began reporting findings from its six-month investigation, during which data from state health departments across the country were gathered and analyzed.

The newspaper's review found the death rate from all forms of violence in 2010, the most recent year for which comparable data are available on other communities, is higher in Detroit than in any other major U.S. city: 15.7 per 100,000 children.

Nearly 500 Detroit children have died in homicides since 2000. Most were gun-related, and most were among children 14-18.

The newspaper also reports more babies are born prematurely in Detroit than in any major city in the U.S.
