Man Tries To Fix Pot Holes On His Own

LEVITTOWN, NY -

A Long Island man is taking matters into his own hands and becoming the unofficial pothole fixer in his neighborhood. However, his Good Samaritan ways are causing some controversy.

Bobby Fitzgerald doesn't work for the Public Works Department, though his "side job" suggests otherwise.

"I start with my bucket, scoop up some dirt...take my broom to clean up and take my shovel and go to the next one," he described.

The 55 year old delivery driver has been filling the potholes in his Levittown, LI neighborhood on his own; fed up, he says, by the slow response to complaints he's made about them.

People are sick and tired...of having their cars torn up..." he explained.

Public works crews have covered Fitzgerald's patch, so clearly he's on their radar.

"I think he's off the mark. He couldn't be more wrong...," said Mike Deery, a Hempstead spokesman.

Deery says using sand, which Fitzgerald does, actually makes the problem worse. As for Fitzgerald himself, FOX asked him what he would do if they asked him to stop.

"They would have to prove to me that they're gonna do something...do it," explained Fitzgerald.
