Hollywood Reacts to Philip Seymour Hoffman Death

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES (FOX 11 / CNS) - The Screen Actors Guild released a statement on the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman today, saying SAG-AFTRA honors the "life and legacy" of the late actor.

The Academy Award-winning Hoffman, 46, was found dead of an apparent drug overdose today in Manhattan.

Hoffman had been nominated for seven SAG Awards and won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for his role as Truman Capote in the 2005 film, "Capote," a role that won him the best actor Oscar.

"He was an extraordinary actor with tremendous range and the gift of fully and deeply realizing his amazing characters in films from `Magnolia' and `Capote' to `Charlie Wilson's War' and `Doubt.' He was such a great talent and his loss is just deeply sad," SAG-AFTRA President Ken Howard said. "On behalf of his fellow actors all members of SAG-AFTRA, our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends."

Some of Hoffman's movie industry colleagues also paid tribute to the actor, who had memorable roles in movies such as "Boogie Nights," "The Master," "Almost Famous," "Mission: Impossible III" and, more recently "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."

"R.I.P. Philip Seymour Hoffman. One of the greats of his generation," Tweeted actor Albert Brooks.

Tom Hanks, who co-starred with Hoffman in "Charlie Wilson's War," called the actor a "giant talent."

"This is a horrible day for those who worked with Philip," he said, according to People.com.

Hoffman's family also issued a statement expressing appreciation for the support they have received at such a difficult time and asking people to keep the actor in their thoughts and prayers.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers."
