Facebook turns 10 on Tuesday, Zuckerberg thanks users

Posted: Updated:

(WJBK) -- On Tuesday, Facebook celebrates its 10th birthday.

Mark Zuckerberg co-founded the social network on this day back in 2004 to link together university students.

"I remember getting pizza with my friends one night in college shortly after opening Facebook," Zuckerberg posted on his Facebook page. "I told them I was excited to help connect our school community, but one day someone needed to connect the whole world."

It wasn't until 2006 that Facebook opened to anyone 13 and up. In 2009 the "Like" button was introduced.

One out of six people worldwide use Facebook. At the end of 2013, more than three-quarters of Facebook's 1.23 billion users - 945 million - logged in using their mobile devices at least once a month.

Facebook's stock is soaring after the social networking company reported stronger-than-expected results for the fourth quarter, fueled by strong mobile advertising revenue.
