Villanova Students Forced To Leave Due To Power Outage

Posted: Updated:

"It got pretty hectic pretty fast. Everyone was on their phone trying to make plans," said one Villanova student. They received news from administrators Wednesday afternoon they weren't expecting.

"We had a hall meeting and they pretty much pulled everyone from the dorm in and said find a way home if you can get home because we don't know how long we're going to be out of power," said Connor McGuiness. He's from Connecticut and his two floor mates are from Oregon and Long Island New York. His mom is driving three hours from Fairfield Connecticut to pick them up Thursday because the university is closing for the next two days.

"Tonight we are going to find some food. We're stocking up at McDonalds then we'll bundle up and try to stay warm all night," said Nick Voorhees.

The university says all campus buildings have generators but they're for emergency lighting and the fire alarm system. Dougherty food hall will be the only building open for students who can't leave and will provide heat and food. The storm that caused this outage caught students by surprise.

"It really wasn't that bad but going through Sandy back at home on Long Island, it's similar but not that bad. But seeing all the trees down behind the dorm it's a little similar," said Luke Cornetta.

Villanova said it will work to relocate students who can't get home.

Elsewhere in Delaware County residents are struggling with power outages too. In Ardmore near Oakford Road electricity has been out for some since 4:30 Wednesday morning. Ed Magargee is lucky to have a generator he bought but hasn't used since Hurricane Floyd.

"It started right up so we got the heaters. We're heating up house, plugged in the refrigerator and a light for my wife to play with her phone. We're surviving," said Magargee.
