Alvarez defends NATO terrorism charges

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) - Cook County's chief prosecutor is defending her office's decision to charge three NATO activists with terrorism under Illinois law.

Anita Alvarez's comments came shortly after a jury on Friday acquitted the three men of all terrorism-related charges. They were convicted of several lesser charges, including arson-related counts.

Addressing the media shortly after the verdicts, the state's attorney raised her voice as she was asked if she accepted that her office had gone too far in bringing terrorism charges.

She responded, "Absolutely not!" And she said she would bring the same terrorism charges "tomorrow morning - with no apologies."

Without explaining further, she also raised the specter of the Boston Marathon attacks last year, saying, "Have we forgot about Boston?"
