The St. Paul teen was taken into custody and booked into juvenile detention, with felony auto theft charges expected by Tuesday.

The school bus was empty at the time of the theft.

The bus driver had stopped for a coffee at the Holiday gas station on Rice Street and Wheelock Parkway at about 7:50 a.m.

The boy told police he found the "abandoned" bus and thought he would return it to the Centerline Bus Company lot on Rice Street.

The driver immediately called her supervisor and GPS tracked the bus to the Rice Street lot.

The boy said he became scared when he heard police chatter over the bus radio, so he drove down Rice Street, turned onto County Road B2, then into the Shell gas station on Dale Street, where he sideswiped a barrier in front of pump No. 3.

The boy was detained at the scene by a bus company supervisor until police arrived.
