Daytime Burglaries Way Up in Playa Del Rey, Westchester, LAPD Not Doing Enough?

Posted: Updated:

LAPD posted security video on YouTube of three young men breaking into a house in the Playa Del Rey/Westchester area on February 8.  We did the story on February 10; not because the police needed our help and asked us to but because the residents hoped greater publicity would bring an end to a rash of burglaries in the area.

There have been 45 burglaries since last August in this area according to LAPD crime maps, and yet, residents tell us, they're frustrated with how little progress there seems to be on catching the bad guys.  We've been told there have been identifiable fingerprints, license plates from suspicious cars roaming the neighborhood and security video and yet not much in the way of arrests.

We talked to one man who's house was burglarized last August.  It happened in the day time, while he was at work and his family was gone.  They ransacked the bedrooms, stole a laptop, and a couple of cameras, but mostly what they stole was his family's sense of security.
He says, the neighbors are working together to keep on eye on each others houses.  There's also amped up security systems.

We tried to talk to LAPD's Pacific Division, with no luck. But residents are feeling like this rash of burglaries is low priority for the police.  After all, no one's been hurt.  Damage to the homes is minimal since many of the burglaries occurred without a forced break in.

Still, 45 burglaries?   Residents want to know, how long does it take to run fingerprints or a license plate.  How many of these burglaries have to occur for the police to finally make them a priority.

Meantime, take a moment to really look at the security video.  It's pretty clear and perhaps you can help LAPD get these guys.  In this incident, there were three young men.  Cameras capture one of them cutting the power lines and being surprised when sparks fly.  They make it inside the house and ransack a bedroom and apparently in another room, one of the burglars finds a gun.

These guys may be responsible for this burglary, maybe not all 45.  But residents would feel a whole lot better if there was some progress in the 45 investigations and an arrest for at least one.
