Yankees Captain Derek Jeter Announces Last Season

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK, NY -

Derek Jeter, who will turn 40 in June, has been the Yankees' starting shortstop since 1996. He was named Captain by George Steinbrenner during the 2003 season. Jeter just announced via his Facebook page that 2014 will be his last season.

"Now it is time for the next chapter. I have new dreams and aspirations, and I want new challenges."

Jeter writes that he wants to pursue business and philanthropic work.

"And I want the ability to move at my own pace, see the world and finally have a summer vacation."

Jeter, in a letter posted on Facebook, also thanked the Yankees and the people of New York. Despite playing baseball being something he's vividly wanted since he was a kid, Jeter realized last year that it was time for him to move on.

"I realized that some of the things that always came easily to me and were always fun had started to become a struggle. The one thing I always said to myself was that when baseball started to feel more like a job, it would be time to move forward," he wrote.

Jeter's letter has gotten more than 5,000 likes and 8,000 shares.

The comments have been supportive. Bill Zimmermann said, "Good luck Captain. You will be missed after this season."

Robert Willard wrote, "What class act. You will be missed sir. My favorite Yankee ever. #2 The Captain DJ."

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
