South Jersey Prepares For Big Storm, Road Salt In Short Supply

LINDENWOLD, N.J. -

A lot of communities and private plow drivers through the area are running low on supplies in this rough winter.

Dave Schratwieser joins us in Camden County, where some are scrambling for more salt.

"Salt is gold right now."

Preparing for a storm that could include heavy snow, sleet and rain makes this stuff the most valuable commodity around. With all the storms this winter, road salt supplies are dwindling fast and it's just flat out hard to come by.

"There's not a lot of salt. Everybody needs it all at once. The problem is the places that do have it are giving it out in rations," said Camden County Freeholder Ian Leonard.

Camden County road crews were loading up on salt at the county public works yard in Lindenwold Wednesday, scooping up tons of salt and loading trucks that will plow and treat over 400 miles of roadway over the next several days. The game plan for this storm is simple.

"We do the pre-treat that we normally do all the time with the brine solution, unfortunately we can't salt a lot of places because we just don't have it," Leonard explained.

The county crews started early Wednesday, treating mile after mile of highway with brine to prevent icing conditions. While the brine went down, repair crews back at the garage were busy fixing plows and trucks so the county can maximize all of its snow removal equipment for the big storm. Keeping this fleet on the streets is a full time job.

"All of our equipment is beat up, the parts that we need, some things aren't readily available," Leonard added.

Workers are preparing too, some will be working straight through the next several days trying to keep the highways passable, grabbing a few hours' sleep here and there.

"Without that total team effort, this would not happen, "Leonard said. "These people are sleeping in their trucks, they sleep in the buildings behind you."

The experts say there a simple way the driving public can help out as road crews tackle this big storm.
