Winter Storm Blows Through NJ; Residents Stay Inside

Posted: Updated:
TRENTON, N.J. -

Another winter storm is slowing the ride to work across New Jersey and likely will for most of the day. Most of the snow has stopped temporarily, except in the Northern parts of Jersey; however, this is only a temporary lull.

Unlike previous storms, Thursday's is expected to continue until early Friday. Forecasters say snow and sleet is expected to change to rain by the afternoon and evening before transitioning back to snow.

Joe Dee from NJDOT talked to Good Day in the morning. The roads were really slick, but Dee told FOX 29 they prepared yesterday and have enough salt for the entire storm. That being said, the figures were very astounding because NJ has already gone through 373,000 tons of salt for this winter season, 120,000 more than last year.

Up to 14 inches of snow has already fallen in Newark, NJ. And this is just the first wave. More is definitely possible throughout the state. Central and coastal sections could receive as much as 10 inches and 4 to 6 inches are possible from Ocean County south.

State offices are closed.

Most schools are closed and many students will lose winter break because their districts must make up the time lost to snow days.

There are speed restrictions on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.

Jenn Fred has been driving around South New Jersey and giving the road conditions. So much snow accumulated in the morning. Conditions are still dangerous. Many major roads and side roads were very snowed up. In fact, police cars were even getting stuck in the snow. By noon, Jenn saw more cleared main roads; however, many of the side roads still needed plowing. Residents will have a lot of digging out in when this snow madness stops.

FOX 29's Drew Dickman is in Atlantic City, where there is a coastal flood advisory. There are some drains that have already flooded.

"We've seen a lot of ponding on roads, as well," Dickman said. The 40 to 50 mile winds are driving the rain sideways. By noon, it was just wind that was the problem. Drew showed a sign that had most of its letters blown off. This part of New Jersey is experiencing a different side of the storm that what most of Pennsylvania is currently experiencing.

"I feel like I'm covering a different storm," Dickman said.

With the current lull in activity, crews will try their best to make as much headway into the cleanup. Dee tells FOX 29 that 2,300 crews are actively plowing the snow right now.
