For many Minnesotans, this winter has been the worst in recent memory -- but is it really that bad? Fox 9 News took a look at the data to find out how this year stacks up against winters past.

Monday's snowy mess on the roads made for yet another slow commute, and it was far from the first in a winter full of traffic wallops. So, Fox 9 News took a look at how this season is stacking up by the numbers.

1. Snow emergencies

The city of Minneapolis has declared 6 snow emergencies so far this winter. Typically, the city only declares three snow emergencies a year.

2. Snow events

Monday's snow marked the 21st snow event in Minneapolis, where the city uses street names alphabetically to keep track. Last year, there were 31 snow events overall.

For the curious, Monday's event was dubbed 'Union' after a few blocks that are now buried in the middle of the University of Minnesota campus.

3. Persistent plowing

The Minnesota Department of Transportation tells Fox 9 News their plows were out on the roads on 29 of January's 31 days, which accounts for 94 percent of the month.

4. Tons of salt

So far this winter, MnDOT has applied 68,000 tons of salt to metro roads. Last year, the agency used half that amount during the entire winter season; however, both MnDOT and the city of Minneapolis say they have enough salt to get through the season as long as this year's spring is better than the last one.
