Botox tried as new treatment for chronic headaches

Posted: Updated:

More than 300 million people struggle with chronic headaches.

The problem is more prevalent in women than in men, and now more teens and kids are affected.

Experts warn the remedies to help them are tricky.

It felt like a bomb going off inside the head of this happy and active 16-year-old.

"It started about a year ago. Pain right here behind my eyes," said Sydney.

Weeks went by and the pain got progressively worse.

Sydney's mom has tried everything to dial back her daughter's migraine pain, diet changes, relaxation therapies and lots of medicine. Some worked a little, some had awful side effects, but most didn't work at all.

That was until Sydney tried something new.

The FDA recently approved use of the number one muscle paralyzing and anti-wrinkle injection to relieve migraines.

"I kinda laughed, I thought really, Botox? [But] if it works, I'll try it," claimed Sydney.

Forty one shots of Botox were given throughout Sydney's head, neck and shoulders.

"I don't want migraines to rule my life," said Sydney.

The first two Botox treatments and acupuncture eased Sydney's pain enough to get her back in class this school year. However, the third treatment of Botox backfired.

"This morning she woke up [and] she was a completely different person," said Sydney's mom.

Sydney was back in bed and out of school for weeks again.

"I get really frustrated because I'm not performing to the best of my ability and it's not my fault," Sydney claimed.

Still holding onto hope, this is a tough symptom to treat.

"I spend a lot of time coaching kids that they will get better, as awful as today may feel, someday you will get better and we have to keep on working, and working at it," stated Sydney's mom.
