Are you paying too much for car insurance?

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Consumer watchdogs claim many drivers in Florida are getting punished on their car insurance because of their education or occupation.

The Florida Insurance Commissioner first raised concerns about the correlation between education, occupation and auto insurance rates seven years ago.

Drivers without a college education and/or in blue collar jobs often pay more than they would if they had a higher level of education or white collar occupation.

He asked state lawmakers to restrict the practice, but the legislature did not respond.

"It's very wrong and it is hurting me tremendously," said Danny Williams, who has driven vans and trucks for a living for the past 30 years. He says he has not caused an accident throughout the course of his driving career, so he says he should not pay extra because he does not have a college degree.

"It just makes it that much harder for people to claw their way up," said Bill Newton, Executive Director of the Florida Consumer Action Network. "How is that fair?"

The insurance industry has said these rates are justified because people with lower levels of education and/or blue collar jobs statistically have more claims.
