New Cafe Allows Nursing Moms Comfort

Posted: Updated:

A new type of cafe is open in San Antonio, Texas that's specifically geared toward new moms, their newborns and the importance of breast-feeding.

There's nothing like a good snack from mommy.

"It's an amazing experience to know that you are making a difference in your baby's life," said a mom.

And with the help of a colorful scarf, mommy can discreetly breast-feed her baby in public at new places like this one, the new baby cafe on the city's northwest side.

"These types of things are open to the entire community you don't have to belong to WIC, there are no income qualifications every woman is invited," said Dr. Thomas Schlenker, M.D., M.P.H., Director of Metro Health. "This is completely conducive to breast-feeding. There are private rooms, but living room areas too"

Baby cafe aims to encourage more mothers to breast-feed. New moms can also get help with breast-feeding from a lactation consultant as well as nutritional advice. However, most of all, it's a place where new moms can get breast-feeding support.

"A lot of moms don't get that from their own houses or their own family or their own workplace and having a place like this really, really helps," said Annette Rangel, a breast-feeding mom.

Moms should not feel embarrassed about breast-feeding their babies, they should feel empowered; that's the goal.

"It doesn't matter what anyone tells you; you can breast-feed in the state of Texas. Be comfortable; it's your baby, your baby wants to eat, so why hide your baby or cover your baby and if your baby doesn't want to be covered, then your baby doesn't want to be covered. Ya know somebody wouldn't want to eat with a drape over their face. Why should a baby?" said Rangel.

Moms are encouraged to visit the baby cafe as many times as they wish to bond and nourish their little one.
