Detroit prepares for flooding during mid-week warmup

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

The city of Detroit is preparing for roadway flooding during this week's warmup. Wednesday's warmer temperatures revealed which city drains are blocked or clogged with ice and snow.

"The state will be clearing the roads that they handle, so that's Gratiot, Woodward, other roads like that. And we're going to handle the main thoroughfares but we definitely need help in neighborhoods," says mayoral spokesperson Alexis Wiley.

The city is asking residents to pitch in and look at the drains in their neighborhoods, checking for clogs or backups. They are also reminding to clear a spot for fire hydrants in case of an emergency.

Sometimes clearing your drain doesn't fix the problem, and sometimes debris swept into the drain can cause flooding as well. If you're experience those problems call the Department of Water and Sewerage at (313) 267-7401.
