Clown Shortage: World clown association down to 2,500 members

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

It may sound like a punch line but this is no laughing matter. There's a world wide clown shortage going on in fact there's only about 2,500 members in the world clown association.

Today I met with a professional clown named "Sweet Petunia" who owns www.azclowns.com

Sweet Petunia has been a clown since 1996 doing kids birthday parties, private events, and festivals. She says it's a lot of fun you can make pretty good money. She's hoping younger people will give it a thought as older clowns begin to hang up the wig.

"I tell them please don't make it your main job. You need to make this your side job because you can't count on it for permanent income or regular income, but it's a great side job," said Sweet Petunia.

Sweet Petunia has made this a family affair. Her daughter is also a clown named "Treasure" and her grandson who's only 19 is "Silly Willy". And while she says it's fun you also have to be a good performer willing to do whatever it takes to entertain the crowd.

Since there's a shortage I decided to see if I had what it takes to clown around. Sweet Petunia helped me out by turning me into a clown character. I still don't have a character name yet though.
