SARASOTA (FOX 13) -

There's a big hubbub about what to do with an alligator that's made its home inside a Sarasota neighborhood storm drain.

Photos taken at the scene show the gator has retreated back into the drain, with community leaders and authorities hoping to get it out safely.

Maintenance crews in The Meadows apartment told FOX 13 that the gator is about 9 feet long, and he is retreating further back into the drain.

The plan right now is to monitor the situation for another day in hopes that the gator will leave on its own.

Florida Fish & Wildlife issued a statement after checking on the animal:

"The FWC officer who observed the alligator found it was not stuck, but that it retreated into the culvert when people approached.  Since wildlife is naturally wary of humans, we would expect the animal to behave by retreating," the statement said.  "Our advice in this case, as it is in many cases, is to leave the animal alone so it can go about its business. Unless this animal creates a nuisance or a public safety issue, its better off in the long run - without people  interfering in its daily routine."

So as of Friday afternoon, there was no plan to bring a trapper out.
