City Council holds hearing on traffic deaths

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Some New York City parents are all bound together by a common tragedy: their sons and daughters were killed by vehicles on city streets.

Amy Cohen lost her son, Sammy Cohen Eckstein, 12, in October when he was struck and killed by a van in Brooklyn. She was among those telling her story to members of the City Council on Monday.

"We hope our stories make a difference, everyone is starting to hear statistics I never heard before Sammy was killed, every 30 hours someone is killed, every 11 seconds someone is struck by a vehicle, 5 of them are children every day, they're just not numbers they're people," she said.

Newly appointed Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg attended and testified at the hearing and promised to work hard to implement the mayor's vision zero plan. It was unveiled last week and includes more than 60 initiatives including lowering the city's speed limit and installing more speed and red light cameras.

So when will we actually see the first results of this?

"As soon as the weather gets better you're going to see us out making intersections safer, improving lighting, there are concrete things you will see right away," Trottenberg told Fox 5.

The hearing comes as Mayor de Blasio's security detail was caught on tape speeding and running red lights.

Some parents, like Cohen and Lizi Rahman whose son Asif was killed by a truck in 2008, say at this point want the focus to stay off the mayor and on implementing his plan.

"There is a glimmer of hope, because I have been fighting for 6 years," Rahman said.

"We hope they live up to their promise and we're here to hold them accountable," Cohen said.

Commissioner Trottenberg said her staff will be meeting with police precincts and community boards throughout the city to determine where enforcement needs to be targeted first.

The saying art is autobiographical takes on a whole new meaning when your canvas is a fully nude human body, as it is for artist Andy Golub. Andy along with 30 other artists and 45 Technicolor models paraded around several Manhattan hotspots over the weekend for NYC Body Painting day. Believe or not, this is completely legal in New York City.
