ALEXANDRIA, Minn. (KMSP) -

A Douglas County sheriff's deputy is in recovery after he was shot last night outside Alexandria and two suspects who fled were later found dead in the snow.

Police said the deputy was responding to a suspicious vehicle off 50th Avenue in Hudson Township just after 9 p.m. Monday when one of the two people inside -- a 29-year-old woman and 24-year-old man, both from North Dakota -- shot and hit the deputy in the chest.

"The deputy did have a conversation with the occupants in the car," Douglas County Sheriff  Troy Wolberson said.

The deputy was wearing a bulletproof vest and was treated and released; however, without the vest, he would have been seriously injured, Wolbersen said.

The deputy exchanged gunfire with the two suspects until they fled in the vehicle, but the pair ultimately fled the scene on foot once their vehicle got stuck in the snow. After searching the area, police found the man and the woman dead in the snow with a pistol and long gun nearby; however, investigators won't say whether the two were hit by the deputy's return fire, took their own lives, or perhaps froze to death.

The Ramsey County medical examiner's office will later release the cause of death. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now investigating the case.

The deputy's identity has not been released; however, officials say he is a 3-year veteran.

This is a strong warning from the Hennepin County Attorney's Office: If you have older or disabled loved ones, keep an eye on their money. This comes as prosecutors are seeing a sharp rise in identity theft and swindle cases, often of vulnerable adults, and often by people they trust.
