CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

State child welfare officials are investigating a woman whose 2-year-old son was found outside by himself late Thursday on the South Side with no coat, shoes or hat.

The boy was found about 11:50 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of East 82nd Street and South Avalon, according to police. The temperature was 3 degrees at the time, according to the National Weather Service.

Authorities initially released a flyer with his photo asking for help identifying him. The 2-year-old's mother was located about 5:30 a.m., authorities said.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is currently investigating allegations of neglect against her, spokeswoman Karen Hawkins said. The agency has had no prior contact with the family.

DCFS has taken protective custody of the boy and placed him in a foster home, Hawkins said.

After he was found, the boy was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital in good condition, police said.
