Conn. gets new area code as phone demand rises

Posted: Updated:

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut is getting another area code.

The state Public Utilities Regulatory Authority said Monday that 959 will be assigned in the geographical area that uses the 860 area code.

Remaining unassigned numbers in the 860 area code are expected to run out by the end of the year. Regulators say it's because of continuing demand for telephone numbers.

Regulators say the 959 area code will go into effect on Aug. 30. Customers requesting new service, another line or moving phone service may be assigned a number in the 959 area code.
