Comerica Park coping with a frozen field

DETROIT (WJBK) -

With temperatures in the twenties, it's hard to believe opening day is just a few weeks away.

This has been the coldest winter in 35 years for metro Detroit, and the eighth coldest winter ever. The harsh temperatures have been hard on the grass at Comerica Park, begging the question if the field will be ready in time for the big game.

Detroit's Winter Classic was a big hit but took a toll on the park. Crews dug up the grass to make way for the ice rink and now baseball fans are wondering who will pull the stadium out of the deep freeze.

Heavy construction is going on inside Comerica Park, and a dome is being used to heat the field. Reports say $250,000 could be spent on new grass.

Opening day is March 31, with no major warm-up in site.

"So when it comes to opening day, the end of March, usually temperatures, air temperatures, are in the low 50s. It looks like this year we're going to be a little bit below that, and the ground still has a decent chance of still being frozen," says FOX 2 Weather Authority Derek Kevra.

Tigers fans say they will brave the weather, and can't wait to see their favorite team back on the field.
